Tsema is named after my mother, but its story began long before the brand itself.
When my grandmother was in active labour, preparing to welcome my mother into the world, she was determined to finish renovating the front porch of her home. Seeing this, the women in her community gathered around her. Together, they completed the work while she laboured, ensuring she could focus on bringing new life into the world.
Because of that remarkable act of collective care, my grandmother named my mother Mma Letsema.
In Sesotho and Setswana, Letsema speaks to the spirit of people coming together to work collectively towards a shared purpose. It is a word rooted in generosity, community, craftsmanship and shared effort.
That spirit became the foundation of this brand.
Years later, in February 2021, I attended my very first candle, reed diffuser and linen mist making class. I left inspired, carrying the excitement of creating something beautiful with fragrance. On my journey home, I received a phone call that would change my life forever. My mother had been diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.
In that single day, fragrance became something far more meaningful than scent.
It became a way to preserve memories, honour moments and create comfort during life's most difficult seasons.
Just as individual fragrance notes come together to create one beautiful scent, the people, experiences and memories that shape our lives come together to create something lasting.
Tsema was born from that belief.
Today, every diffuser and linen mist is handcrafted with intention—not simply to fragrance a room, but to transform spaces into places of peace, warmth and connection.
Because the most meaningful luxury isn't found in possessions.
It's found in the moments we create, the people we gather with, and the memories that linger long after we've left the room.
